EMU Track Complete

A Lasting Partnership: Going the Distance at Eastern Mennonite University

Over the past 15 years, Harman Construction has had the privilege of working on a variety of projects at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), completing eight different initiatives that have added value to the campus. Each project has been an opportunity to strengthen our partnership with the university, and our latest endeavor—constructing the state-of-the-art track and field facility, is truly the "icing on the cake" for us, and we couldn’t be more excited about the outcome.

A Track to Be Proud Of

The new track facility is a real gem for EMU. As a 400-meter oval with eight running lanes, the track is designed with precision and durability in mind. One of the standout features is the multi-layered track surface — five layers of material carefully constructed to ensure both athlete performance and long-lasting use.

The track's slope has tolerances no greater than 1%. This ensures proper drainage without compromising the integrity of the surface. All surface water, including that from the infield event areas, flows seamlessly into a slot drain system located on the interior of the track. This attention to detail is critical, especially in maintaining a safe and dry environment for the athletes.

Lighting Up the Night—Without Lighting Up the Sky

Another highlight of the project is the Musco Sports lighting system, which allows for nighttime athletic events. EMU’s facility was designed with sustainability and the surrounding community in mind. The lighting system is carefully calibrated to ensure that 95% of the light shines directly on the track, while only 5% is dispersed into the surrounding area, minimizing light pollution and reducing the impact on nearby residents.

Supporting a Full Range of Events

This track is more than just a place to run. It’s a comprehensive facility designed to support a wide range of track and field events, from the long jump and triple jump, with designated sand pits, to the shotput, javelin, hammer throw, and discus. For safety, we installed a robust netting system to ensure that throws, like the hammer and discus, don’t pose a risk to those using the track.

One of the most exciting features is the steeplechase pit and barrier. Steeplechase events require unique design considerations, such as curbing adjustments to create a dedicated lane for runners to clear the barrier and water pit. It’s a dynamic element of the facility that will make this track stand out among smaller colleges.

Looking to the Future

As we reflect on the success of this project, we're proud of the long-lasting relationship we've built with EMU. Every project we've completed on campus has been marked by smooth collaboration, excellent results, and a shared vision of creating spaces that elevate both the university and its students. The track facility exemplifies that spirit and serves as a testament to what’s possible when two organizations work hand in hand toward a common goal.

We look forward to continuing this partnership and being a part of the exciting future of Eastern Mennonite University.
